REIT types - beta…
REITs now serve the economy and society across dozens of sectors.
Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), REITs have grown from a handful of sectors (office, retail, multifamily residential, industrial) to more than 50.
This expansion marks a massive increase in the relevance and impact of REITs on society.
Here’s a perspective presented in periodic table style.
There are real-world REITs already operating in each of the categories outlined below.
Classification framework
As REITs exist to serve economic and social needs, we present REIT sectors within a broad industry-wide classification framework.
The nine-sector taxonomy used in the periodic table is based on the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), supplemented by the Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
Each element in the REIT table includes a score for the impact of each REIT sub-sector on the economy and society, based on four dimensions: scale, social utility, connectivity and productivity.
